Recently an athlete wrote to us asking if we knew a good posturologist in his city.

The question arose among the members of the POSTUROKiT team: what really makes a good posturologist?

The answer was very simple. The basis of Posturology is observation and the beauty of this approach is that the practitioner takes the time with his patient to carry out a postural assessment through logical and reproducible tests.

Basic posturology tests

First of all, the practitioner evaluates the body’s adaptation in space, or in other words its relationship to gravity. This can be done with a positioner or in free placement by projecting Barré’s vertical using a the plumb line or a medical laser and check the frontal and sagittal plane.

For the movements observation, there’s the possibility to use a postural grid which also informs us about the horizontal alignments, thanks to the checkered pattern that interferes with the scapular girdle.

Complete postural assessment

The way of working in posturology depends, of course, on the specialty of each one but also on their consultation time planning. There are practitioners who test the alignments before/after every manipulation or before/after putting on insoles, gutters or even eyeglasses.

This approach gives precise feedback on each intervention and guides the practitioner to the right decision in the of the patient’s postural management.

The postural assessment report which can be a written or printed, integrates the results of the tests and allows the patient to become aware of any postural imbalances and get motivated about the next steps recommended by the practitioner.

In their daily practice, posturologists can call on colleagues from another specialty. POSTUROKiT has therefore created a geolocated directory of posturologists, to facilitate teamwork and also give practitioners more visibility. You can register here.
